De socas nos pés

Dos Países Baixos para o mundo...

redactie@metronieuws.nl

Tenho pena desta atitude dos holandeses. Vou guardar a capa do jornal para me lembrar sempre do que eles nos chamaram, e de apoiar sempre as equipas que jogarem contra a Holanda. Nem que seja a Espanha.

Uma última palavra: Fuck you dutch journalists!!!!!!

Enviei o seguinte e'mail, sob o título "Theater voorbij" para o e-mail que indicaste:

«Dear gentlemen (?) of Metronieuws,

I'd like to congratulate you on the wonderful cover you just published. It is in fact refreshing to see that your newspaper (?) will stop printing fiction. Of course, as portuguese, I am not exactly pleased that Portugal is not playing the final, but maybe, for once, I will have some rest, as someone living in the Netherlands, from all the rubbish you have been writing about.

I can understand though> you'd have liked to see Arjen Robben diving. I have to confess he has somewhat more grace than Ronaldo does. It's only normal, he has to compensate for the quality gap with something. Just like the rest of the dutch team.

I imagine you, dutch, would prefer a more vigorous game from the portuguese, one in which Ronaldo would thank Bouhlarouz for trying to rip part of his leg off. Or maybe one that would emulate the wonderfully fair-playing of Heitinga. Or maybe the slight caresses that Sneijder (or van der Vaart, I am not sure) gave to Petit when he, the pig, went to complaint with Heitinga, on the floor after the brutal tackle from Deco, the fact that the ball hadn't been returned to the portuguese, as if it were a divine law to do so.

Unfortunately it wasn't exactly that way things happened. The dutch team was appaling, starting with van Basten, who has shown how incompetent he can be. The world doesn't turn a blind eye on savages like Bouhlarouz. Or maybe it does, since he should have been sent off immediately. Some players, on the other hand, get actually hurt when they get the pins of someone elses boots on their thighs. Or when they are actually elbowed on the face, albeit by chance. Maybe some people get hurt. Not that the same happened to van Bommel, the poor fellow, who was (I won't deny it) head-butted by Figo, and then fell down as if hit by a lightning, maybe just with a delay of 5-to-10 seconds. Nothing unusual, just the average mental response time dutch seem to apply to football.

Leaving the irony aside, I believe your front cover shows a multitude of problems. The first is that you haven't digested a match in which Holland was the worst side throughout the entire match. Second, that you refuse to see it and blame that loss on some diving pattern of the portuguese players. Third, that you seem to have a very (extremely) short memory and don't remember that Holland only has beaten Portugal once before. Fourth, that also you forgot the amazing wash-out you took just two years ago. Fifth, these attitudes show a lack of fair-play that seems to reflect that the dutch have some kind of inferiority complex that doesn't allow them to loose against countries they deem minor. Sixth, this inferiority complex reflects some kind of middle-aged thought that the dutch have some divine right to rule over whatever they set their eyes into.

I also didn't like the dives the portuguese take once in a while. Maybe if you understood a game where technique means something more than just kicking a ball to a striker, you could also understand that a dribble leaves the players frequently exposed to the attack of the opponents, who can unbalance the player with the ball quite easily. Of course, this doesn't mean the portuguese players were fouled every time they fell. They were also faking it quite often. But from a country with divers such as Robben and actors such as van Bommel, maybe you are not the ideal people to complaint. Not to mention the lack of fair-play by Heitinga or van Basten, obviously.

It is not the portuguese players' fault that Holland hasn't produced a player like Figo or Ronaldo since van Basten, Gullit or Rijkaard. Or, to a less extent, that wonderful player, in and off the fields, Bergkamp. And it isn't the portuguese players' fault, then it is surely not the portuguese people's fault. And your front page insults them.Your front page alludes to a connection between portuguese in general and some kind of false behaviour. That is simply put, an insult to every single portuguese. That in itself could be unimportant, but it is, more than that, an insult to every portuguese kiving and working in the Netherlands. Not because they were forced, but simply because they chose to do so. The thousands of portuguese who go to work today will have to see and read your front page and will feel insulted by it. Let me stress this out, the portuguese who work in the Netherlands, who contribute for the dutch productivity, who pay taxes and social security and pensions, who buy goods in this country and raise their children within the dutch society, who take the trouble to enhance themselves through life in this country and by doing so, do their best to enhance the country itself, all those people will feel insulted. All because you newspaper (?) didn't have the common decency to bring to the front page other, more important news or, in case it really was to be focused on the match, didn't have the simple sense or sportmanship to congratulate the french on going through the final and, thus, ignored that one of the game's greates legends will say goobye to football at the game's greates match.

Your front cover proved, in fact, that Metronieuws is nothing more than a piece of paper with letters printed on it which mean nothing and have no simple decency. Next time there is some attack against a foreigner, I hope your newspaper won't come, with a huge degree of hypocrisy, condemn the act. Your front cover just made that kind of action more likely. More than that, next time a portuguese team plays in Holland, you will also be responsible for any acts of violence against dutch citizens. because it's not with incendiary words that violence grows, it is, before anything else, with stupid front pages about games (just games, nothing more), like yours today. Personally, from now on and until the time I see some type of apology from your newspaper (?), when I see one of them I will simply throw it into the closest rubbish bin, the only place where it belongs. Maybe it will mean nothing to you, but it will mean something to me. And maybe to the people around, since I will be true to your words and be theatrical about it.

I wish no best regards. You simply don't seem to deserve them.
Joao de Sousa Andre (portuguese citizen and resident in Enschede, the Netherlands).

PS - this e-mail could have been written in dutch. More than can be said about the dutch I met in Portugal, I took the trouble to learn your language. And I never mistook it for german, like you, dutch, mistake portuguese for spanish every time you say with a big smile on your faces "Hola" instead of "Olá". But I chose to write it in english. The reason is simple: it would be too much consideration towards you.»
